What is the optimal tax system ?

We recently discussed this on #economics.

It ends in several arguments :

Flat tax versus progressive / regressive tax
Sales tax versus Income tax
Also property taxes (land tax) has been discussed, as it is argued to be an unavoidable tax
Other taxes, we have not discussed include Inheritance tax, social engineering taxes

pavlicek is a proponent of a national [Sales tax], as it incentivizes saving and investment. teralaser thinks its best to perhaps argue for this as tax at creation and destruction.
